The gift of no gifts

Jon and I decided yesterday that we wouldn’t give each other gifts this year. Financially, we feel pretty tapped out. Jon recently got a new pair of glasses, which wasn’t covered by insurance. We bought a new computer, and of course there are all the gifts we’ve bought for other people. Generally, I get a lot of joy out of buying gifts, but the thought of adding one more for him was just stressing me out. And Jon always asks, half-seriously, okay maybe two-thirds seriously, if we can skip the gifts for each other. This year, I concurred. If we feel more flush in January, we might do a gift exchange then.

What are you getting your spouse/bf/gf/partner this year? Have you scaled back?

  • We tend to give each other gifts throughout the year. My DH doesn’t like saving up to give gifts just for special occasions, he likes to buy things for me whenever he sees something I like, or if there’s something I need/want. I’m fine with doing the same, so we spend our “Christmas” money throughout the year, not specifically for the holiday. That being said, we do tend to get more special food treats this time of year.
