How we learned to stop worrying and love Quantum Leap

Remember Quantum Leap? The TV show starring Scott Bakula that premiered in 1989? Well, it just may save our budget.

Jon and I recently started to think about getting cable. It happened one night when we clicked through every channel only to find that Everybody Loves Raymond was on every one. Wait, that’s every night. Anyway, it was depressing. We don’t need much, but we would love to get Comedy Central, the History Channel, maybe Discovery as well. We’ve rationalized this by saying that if we had cable, we wouldn’t go out so often, though to be honest, we never go out anyway.

This week, however, we decided we can hold on a little longer. The reason: we discovered the Ion Network. It’s quietly nestled between CBS and NBC on our dial. You can’t find it by clicking up and down, however–you have to actually punch in the number if you want to check what’s on. It plays a lot of old reruns: The Drew Carey Show, Family Fued, something with a bunch of old women in it. And, we just discovered, Quantum Leap! Three times a week! This week, we got to see the pilot and the two episodes that followed it. The third episode, in which Teri Hatcher guest-stars as the woman who left Bakula’s character at the altar, was pretty bad. Nevertheless, I think the show should get us through the next few weeks, at least. At least when paired with American Idol.
